Stars Who've Been Fat Shamed By Other Celebs
Living in the public eye is no easy feat. Fame exposes celebrities to all kinds of unsolicited opinions. Stars are sometimes bullied by their own fans, so it seems that there are few people they can trust. Keeping things private doesn't help much either because even celebs who refuse to speak about their personal lives face scrutiny.
You'd think that celebrities are sympathetic toward each other given all they endure, but this isn't always the case. Some stars have even been fat shamed by their peers – is there any compassion in Hollywood? We know that this often takes a toll on celebrities because a few have forward to speak out about their experiences.
Golden Globe Award-winning actor Lena Dunham, for example, responded to haters after they took to her Instagram account to comment on her body. "Of course weight loss can be the result of positive change in habits, but guess what? So can weight gain," she penned in part in the caption of an Instagram post. "The pics I'm being compared to are from when I was in active addiction with undiagnosed illness. In the four years since I've gotten sober and begun my life as someone who aspires toward health and not just achievement." Unfortunately, these stars who've been fat shamed by other celebs might share Dunham's frustrations.
Piers Morgan went on a rant about Tess Holiday's body
Tess Holiday made waves in the modeling industry after she graced the cover of Cosmopolitan UK in October 2018. The model stunned in an emerald green bathing suit and shared vulnerable details about her mental health journey inside the issue. Despite Holiday's beauty and seemingly down-to-earth personality, her Cosmopolitan cover was criticized.
The infamous Piers Morgan was among those who had a lot to say about the model's body. The TV personality took to Instagram to share a photo of Holiday's cover alongside a lengthy caption. "As Britain battles an ever-worsening obesity crisis, this is the new cover of Cosmo," he penned. "Apparently we're supposed to view it as a 'huge step forward for body positivity.' What a load of old baloney. This cover is just as dangerous & misguided as celebrating size zero models." Holiday seemingly responded to all of the body shaming and backlash in a since-deleted tweet. "To everyone saying I'm a burden on the British health care system, I'm American so you don't have to worry about my fat a**," she wrote in part.
It seems that Piers just couldn't leave Holiday alone because he went on another rant about her body in an open letter she shared with Daily Mail. In the star's statement, he made assumptions about Holiday's health and even criticized a selfie she shared to Instagram.
Katie Hopkins had a lot to say about Lily Allen
British TV personality Katie Hopkins rarely keeps her opinions to herself, so you might not be surprised to hear that she had a lot to say about Lily Allen. Many fans pointed out that her words weren't kind ... at all. During an interview with Heat World, Hopkins played a game where she spun an arrow on a wheel and gave her opinion on whoever it landed on. Although this may have been fun for the infamous columnist, we're guessing that the stars on the receiving end of her insults weren't thrilled to be involved.
"Now I'm not one for Lily Allen really," Hopkins said of the star. "I quite liked her when she was singing and kind of interesting, and then she went off to tell us all about, you know, being a mother, and she was removing herself from the spotlight because she wanted to be a mother. And that largely involved, I think, gaining two stone and looking pretty hideous."
Allen didn't let Hopkins walk away unscathed. Instead, she responded to her insults and body shaming in a series of now-deleted tweets. "Yes, after tragically losing a child so late into my pregnancy I may have gained a few pounds," she penned in part. "I am one of many that find comfort in food. The two pregnancies that followed were terrifying because of what had happened before and I was pretty much on bed rest for 20 months."
Cheryl Tiegs criticized Ashley Graham's Sports Illustrated cover
Many models have come forward to share that the modeling industry is brutal. We can only imagine how competitive things get, so it's not all that shocking to learn that models sometimes turn against each other. However, some might say that former supermodel Cheryl Tiegs took things too far when she made insensitive comments about Ashley Graham's body.
You might recall that the brunette beauty made headlines after she was featured on one of three Sports Illustrated Swimsuit covers in 2016. When asked about Graham's groundbreaking magazine cover during an interview for E! News, Tiegs shared: "I don't like that we're talking about full-figured women because it's glamorizing them because your waist should be smaller than 35 [inches]. That's what Dr. Oz said, and I'm sticking to it. No, I don't think it's healthy. Her face is beautiful. Beautiful. But I don't think it's healthy in the long run."
Graham reacted to the model's statement in a separate interview with E! News, and it turns out that she didn't let her comments bother her. "But what's great is that —the fact that she said it — it means that other women think like her. And what that means is that we really need to change the industry," she said in part. Tiegs later issued an apology.
Jay Mohr insulted Alyssa Milano's post-baby body
Actor and comedian Jay Mohr came under fire after he made unsolicited comments about actor Alyssa Milano's weight during a radio interview (via New York Daily News)."She was one of the presenters," he said. "She's very tiny," he added. "In height. It seems like she had a baby and said, 'I don't really give a s**t' ... I read it on her gut." The two stars had previously crossed paths at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series awards ceremony in 2013.
Milano eventually caught wind of Mohr's comments and as you may have guessed, she didn't seem happy about what he had to say. She took to Twitter to call the "Picture Perfect" actor out directly. "@jaymohr37 So sorry you felt the need to publicly fat-shame me," Milano penned. "Be well and God Bless. Please send my love to your beautiful wife." Mohr later issued an apology, and it appears that Milano had no hard feelings toward him. She even took a comical approach in her response to the star. "@jaymohr37 Thank you. Apology accepted," she wrote in a tweet. "(She grunts while aggressively yet cautiously prying off her head-to-toe Spanx). #PassTheCookies."
Karl Lagerfeld said Adele was 'a little too fat'
The late Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld was arguably just as well known for his controversial opinions as he was for his influence in the fashion industry. In a since-deleted 2012 interview with Metro World News, Lagerfeld took jabs at Adele's appearance. "She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice," he said. Hopefully Lagerfeld didn't think this was a compliment.
Adele shared her thoughts on body shamers during an interview with People, and it seems that there isn't much that can shake her confidence. "I've never wanted to look like models on the cover of magazines," told the magazine. "I represent the majority of women and I'm very proud of that."
Lagerfeld may have eventually come to his senses because he later issued an apology for his statement. In a separate since-deleted interview with Metro World News, he shared: "I lost over 30 kilos over 10 years ago and have kept it off. I know how it feels when the press is mean you to you in regards to your appearance. Adele is a beautiful girl. She is the best. And I can't wait for her next CD."
Barbara Corcoran made Whoopi Goldberg the punchline of a joke
"Shark Tank" investor Barbara Corcoran found herself at the center of controversy after she appeared on "The View" in 2021. Things got concerning during a segment of the show where Corcoran and the co-hosts of "The View" discussed Khloe Kardashian's jean brand, Good American. Cocoran makes an insensitive joke about Whoopi Goldberg in a clip of the segment shared to YouTube. "And when you get finished with those jeans and decide you don't like them give them to me I'm gonna make two pairs," the businesswoman told Goldberg.
Corcoran faced backlash after the episode aired. Her joke garnered so much media attention that she later issued an apology. "I made a joke at Whoopi's expense, which I realize now wasn't funny," she said in part in a video she shared to Twitter. "For anyone who I may have offended unintentionally, I just wanted to say I really am very sorry." Whoppi reacted to her friend's apology in a video shared by TMZ. She explained that there were no hard feelings, so it seems that the joke didn't end their friendship.
Howard Stern insulted Sam Smith on air
Howard Stern has come under fire over the years for his many controversial comments. However, it seems that the backlash doesn't deter the radio show host from saying exactly what's on his mind no matter how polarizing it may be. Sam Smith was on the receiving end of Stern's jarring opinions during an episode of "The Howard Stern Show" in 2015.
The TV personality made these comments before Smith came out as nonbinary and changed their pronouns to they/them in 2019. "You know what I like about the guy?," Stern said of Smith "He's an ugly motherf***er. He's fat. ... Is he gay? He looks gay to me, not that anybody looks gay, but he does seem effeminate." Stern later claimed his words were taken out of context, but how else could his statement have been interpreted?
Smith didn't respond to Stern directly but some outlets speculated that a few of their tweets were intended to address the radio show host's comments. "Can't believe what I've just read," the unholy singer penned. "Ignore," they wrote in a separate tweet. This might have been the best course of action because who knows how Stern would've fired back if Smith issued a response.
Khloe Kardashian was body shamed by her own family
Khloe Kardashian has opened up about her weight loss journey here and there and even hosted her own fitness-focused show, "Revenge Body." Much of Khloe's life has been documented on reality TV. First on "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" and now through Hulu's "The Kardashians." This means that many of the star's hardships have played out in front of the camera for the world to see, including her family's insensitive comments about her weight.
One clip from "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" that has circulated online displays the scrutiny Khloe faced. Caitlyn Jenner asks the reality TV star if she should lose weight. Khloe defends herself and even a young Kylie Jenner seemed to think Caitlyn's words were harsh. "I don't think she should lose anything," she says. "She's perfect the way she is." Khloe defends herself from her family once again in a separate clip of the show, however, they appear to be dismissive. "I don't think she's so secure with herself," Kris Jenner says in part. Khloe opened up about the impact of her family's words while speaking to a "Revenge Body" contestant during an episode of the show. She admitted she was hurt by their body shaming.
Kelly Clarkson wasn't bothered by Katie Hopkins' offensive tweets
Unfortunately, Katie Hopkins' body shaming didn't end with Lily Allen. The "most hated woman in Britain" also shared her thoughts on Kelly Clarkson. As you may have guessed, Hopkins seemingly didn't hesitate to criticize the "Stronger" singer's body. Hopkins took to Twitter to write, "Jesus, what happened to Kelly Clarkson? Did she eat all of her backing singers?" Look chubsters, Kelly Clarkson had a baby a year ago. That is no longer baby weight. That is carrot cake weight. Get over yourselves."
Hopkins doubled down on the since-deleted tweets during an interview with Access Hollywood that's no longer on the web. "Ultimately Kelly Clarkson is a chunky monkey," she said of the musician. "We can call it baby weight. We can call it puppy fat. We can call it love handles. We can call it muffin top, any of the nice, soft and cuddly names we give it, but ultimately it's fat." Clarkson seemed unbothered by Hopkins' attacks during an interview with Heat World. When the outlet asked her about the political commentator's tweets, she revealed she wasn't even aware of what she said. The "Because Of You" singer went on to share that she doesn't care about the opinions of others.
Andy Reid was body shamed at the Super Bowl
Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid led his team to victory when they won the 2023 Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles. Fox Sports analyst Terry Bradshaw took the stage alongside a group of fellow sports journalists to interview Andy Reid after the Chiefs were presented with their Lombardi trophy. What should have been an amazing and memorable moment for Reid turned into an awkward and uncomfortable encounter after Bradshaw commented on his weight.
"Big guy, let me get the big guy in here," he told the coach in a clip of the moment shared to YouTube. "Come on, waddle over here." Reid didn't say anything about Bradshaw's comments in the moment, so we don't exactly know how he felt about what was said. However, many fans took to social media to reveal they thought the sports journalist's statements were uncalled for. "I was waiting on Andy to (physically) kick him off the platform," one user wrote on Twitter. "Called him fat 3 different ways and then called him old." Another Twitter user wrote, "Time for Terry to retire."
Kanye West and Jillian Michaels shared their unsolicited opinions about Lizzo
Famous personal trainer Jillian Michaels is known for helping people reach their fitness goals, so you'd think that she's all for body positivity. It turns out this might not be the case. Michaels sparked a debate following an appearance on "AM to DM" by BuzzFeed News. The former "The Biggest Loser" star shared her opinion on Lizzo after an interviewer mentioned the singer's message of self-acceptance. "Why are we celebrating her body?," Michaels asked. "Why does it matter? Why aren't we celebrating her music? 'Cause it isn't gonna be awesome if she gets diabetes." Many social media users made it clear that they were appalled by what Michaels had to say. However, she doubled down on her statement with an Instagram post.
Lizzo became the topic of an unnecessary conversation once again during Kanye West's Fox News interview with Tucker Carlson in 2022. "The media wants to put out a perception that being overweight is the new goal, when it's actually unhealthy," the rapper said while speaking about Lizzo. "Let's get aside the fact of whether it's fashion and vogue, which it's not ... it's actually clinically unhealthy, and for people to promote that, it's demonic." Some fans speculated that Lizzo addressed West's comments during a concert in Toronto. "I'm minding my fat, black, beautiful business," she said in part while on stage.
